- Benedict XIV
- (1675–1758)Pope.Benedict XIV was born Prospero Lorenzo Lambertini. He trained as a lawyer, specialising in Canon Law, and became Bishop of Ancona in 1727, Cardinal in 1728, Archbishop of Bologna in 1731 and Pope in 1740. As Pope, he pursued conciliatory policies with his fellow European rulers; he made the position of the Jansenists easier in France and he did much to encourage art and learning in Rome.
